Engagement is Just a Click Away
ideas for using response pads
for all grade levels
Many teachers around the state of Indiana are using the eInstruction CPS systems. David Whicker, a fourth grade teacher at Shenandoah Elementary School, Middleton, Indiana explains “I like how they remove the focus of the lesson from me to the material.” Teachers appreciate how the systems bring the students into the learning process and involve more of them in the discussions. “They help me add variety to my teaching day and lighten my workload”, shares Donna Hutton, East Elementary REACH teacher in Pendleton, Indiana. Many agree the pads give them more control over learning in their classroom by providing the immediate feedback of who “gets it” and who doesn’t. Andrew Smiley, Math teacher at Center Grove HS, Greenwood, Indiana explains “I get INSTANT feedback on how well they did. In fact, I can watch my monitor and see their answers as they input them, all on one spreadsheet! Once everyone is done I can quickly print an instructor summary that shows me everyone's scores, broken down by each assignment, and also the whole class average.”
Some classroom uses teachers have found for the response systems include: homework entry for easy grading, morning work, new subject area pretest, oral test review including printable study guides, multiple choice tests in many different subject areas and interaction with some websites. Many teachers use the Examview questions included with many textbook publications to easily download into the eInstruction system and then select for test preparation. “Setting up a test takes a bit of extra time initially, but the amount of time saved grading the test is more than adequate compensation”, explains Whicker. A variety of reports are available for teachers, students and parents making it easy to track standards. Marcia Farr used CPS systems with a highly interested group of grandparents on Grandparents Day in her third grade classroom at East Elementary. In addition to classroom use, educators have found many applications for professional development activities including some that were utilized at the recent Indiana Computer Educators’ (ICE) Conference.
Teachers, students, parents and grandparents agree that these little pads are very engaging One is only limited by one’s imagination in what can be done with these interactive tools.
