PowerPoint™ and Poetry
for secondary grade students
Poetry is full of imagery created from descriptive
words, metaphors or similes. It generates
emotions and evokes sensory memories in
the reader. Imagery helps the reader understand
the theme or meaning of the poem.
Whether students are introducing a famous
poem or writing their own, multimedia presentations
add sensory dimensions to the work.
PowerPoint™ or other presentation software
packages are software applications that allow
student poets the capacity to interpret word pictures
through visual technology and to enhance
poetic elements with sound.
Presentation suggestions for student authors:
- Create a slide for each stanza in the poem. Generate the
slides with text first to organize the presentation. More
slides may be inserted later for additional multimedia elements.
- Identify image associations evoked by the poem and collect
pictures or graphics that will best communicate these
images. Consider taking your own digital pictures, to
ensure ease of sharing work beyond the classroom, without
related copyright complications.
- Sounds can be inserted within PowerPoint™ directly from
a microphone or from an imported resource file. (e.g.
Heighten the image of “ripples rapidly running over mossy
rocks” by including a sound bite of running water or other
sounds from nature.)
- Add slide transitions and custom animation to the presentation,
to emphasize important phrases or ideas.
Publishing student work using presentation
technologies gives teen writers a sense
of accomplishment and personal creativity.
Students will also gain experience in oral presentation,
taking away a more confident voice
in poetic expression. PowerPoint™ is a registered product name of
Microsoft Corporation.
