I Spy Kid Pix® Poetry!
for primary grade students
Kid Pix®, a popular drawing and writing
program, is a perfect way to publish with your
promising poets. Because students start with
a blank page, your guidance will be essential
in helping students successfully use the many
creativity tools included in the software.
Consider what your students could do
with a spray can that spews shapes, candy
and sports balls all over the screen. Will they
choose a stage or a baseball diamond as a background for their
poem? Some students may decide to use movable, resizable
stickers that enhance their poems about food, plants, prehistoric
animals, or vehicles. Your more confident artists will want
to use the drawing tools to sketch the stars of their monster
rhymes.
After your class has composed and illustrated a collection
of their favorite poetry, try creating slideshows. The animated
images, sounds, and transitions will bring pizzazz to these
poetry productions. Plan a night for parents to come to hear
and see their child’s poetry, giving students an opportunity to
practice their oral presentation skills.
"I Spy" poetry is an effective way
to encourage your students to use visual
clues and alliteration to engage the
reader. Inspire your students by reading
Jean Marzollo’s I Spy books and giving
them time to look through the Kid Pix®
collection of stamps for pictures that
rhyme. After typing their rhyme into a
text box, students can pick an appropriate
background and hide the stamps from
their rhyme in the picture for the reader to
discover.
I spy an idiom, a shape poem, a rhyme,
An acrostic, a haiku, and a student who shines.
I spy a computer, a poem on Kid Pix®,
A slideshow with sound and no bored students to fix.
From simple rhymes to shape poems, and acrostics to point-of-view poems, Kid Pix® is a valuable tool to visually enhance
your classroom poetry projects.
Kid Pix® Deluxe 4 is published by
Broderbund and available online and
at retail locations. Ask your technology
coordinator if your school owns licenses
or standalone copies that you might use in
your lab or classroom.
