Write at Home!
Faced with the plea to, “Please, please help me!” from their child, many parents struggle with the role they should take in writing at home. As teachers, we need to make sure that parents know how to support their aspiring authors. Here is one simple suggestion, from the National Council of Teachers of English, to share with parents about providing assistance in writing: A parent’s “most effective role is not as a critic but as a helper … so resist the tendency to focus on errors in spelling, punctuation and other mechanical aspects of writing.” Instead, emphasize and discuss the ideas your child expresses and celebrate what is done well!
Read the "Top 10 Countdown" article which list ten reasons why students should be encouraged to write at home or the article "Supporting Writing Conventions at Home" for additional tips.
