A literature log is a daily journal where the reader
records anything they want to preserve or remember about the literature
they are reading. The reader is not to summarize the
plot; instead, the written entries should be their personal thoughts,
reactions, interpretations, and questions to what they are reading.
Before recording their thoughts, have students
include the book title, author and then their literature response.
Some suggestions on what the literature log can
include are:
- copied words or phrases you don't understand
- comparing how this book compares to other similar books in the
same genre
- recording phrases or sentences that are exceptionally well-written
- reactions to the plot
- what do you think will happen next?
- how well do you think the author has organized this literature
piece
- reactions to the characters
- record who the characters are in the story
- how did the author develop them into a 3-D person
