Water for Elephants: A Novel
Water for Elephants: A Novel
by Sarah Gruen (Algonquin, 2006)
This circus tale, told through the flashback memories of a ninety-something Jacob Jankowski, is about the veterinarian’s experience during the depression era. Jacob, left penniless after his parent’s death, drops out of school and joins a motley crew of midgets, drunks, freaks and rubes in the Benzini Brothers Most Spectacular Show on Earth. The circus is not only the livelihood, but, also, the “family” for these societal misfits.
Student Activity: Imagine yourself as a misfit in your family, school, or work environment? How would you cope? Would you and others with similar feelings draw together to form your own group or network? Describe the misfit experience in vivid detail.
