Meet the Orchestra*
written by Anne Hayes, illustrated by Karmen Thompson
This book provides a unique way of introducing students to different orchestra instruments and their families. It uses descriptive prose and colorful illustrations of animals playing the instruments.
Activity Idea
Have students take a piece of paper and divide into sections (2-6 depending on grade level). While listening to music played by specific orchestra instruments, students will use pencils, crayons or makers to draw a picture of what they think the instrument is they are listening to. They can draw pictures or write descriptive words about the instrument based on what they are hearing. Older students can write a story about the instrument or tell what they think the instrument is trying to say.
