Marianthe’s Story: Painted Words and Spoken Memories
Marianthe’s Story: Painted Words and Spoken Memories*
written and illustrated by Aliki
This book includes two stories about Marianthe or Maria. One story explains how she came to a new country, a new school and to learn a new language. Maria learns that she can tell her story about her past through the pictures she paints and with her new words which is the second story in the book.

Activity Idea
After discussion about what a family tree is, students will use either paper and markers or a drawing computer program like Kidspiration™ or Kid Pix™ to make a poster of their family tree. Depending on grade level students can add names, descriptions, etc. about their family members.
