100th Day Worries
100th Day Worries
written by Margery Cuyler
Jessica, a worrier, frets over what collection she can take to school for her class’s 100th day celebration. Her family comes to the rescue.

Activity Idea: Prior to 100th Day, plan for students to collect 100 items at home and put them in a paper bag. Parents should count the items with the student for them to practice counting groups of 10 and 1 to 100. On 100th day, students will write 3 descriptive words or sentences or more (depending on level) without telling what they have collected. Students will share their descriptions with others to guess what is in the bag.
Other ideas include:
  • Use lunch-size paper bags that students put their names on and decorate before taking them home.
  • Write a letter to parents explaining the activity of collecting and counting 100 items together that will fit in the bag, indicating the day the bag needs to be returned, and providing suggestions for items children might collect.
  • Students share what items are in their bag and count the 100 items or organize them in groups of 10.
