6+1 Traits®: Conventions
- Eats, Shoots & Leaves: Why, Commas Really Do Make a Difference!
by Lynne Truss (Putnam, 2006)
- Students will have fun as they immediately understand the importance of the comma, as illustrated in this book. There are even endnotes that explain the rule of each illustration.
Activity: Create your own class book about commas! After identifying all the various rules for using a comma in a sentence, each student writes a sentence including a comma that reflects a specific rule. Write the sentence again on a different page, only this time the comma will be used differently. Finally, illustrate each page to help the reader understand the rule, modeling it after Eat, Shoots & Leaves: Why Commas Really Do Make a Difference.
