The Dot
- The Dot
by Peter H. Reynolds
- Picture books are wonderful teaching tools to jumpstart writing ideas or, as in our “pick” below, to simply inspire students to “just begin!” The Dot, written and illustrated by Peter H. Reynolds, published by Candlewick Press, c2003. ‘Her teacher smiled. “Just make a mark and see where it takes you.”’ Vashti is an insecure elementary art student who thinks she cannot draw. With a little encouragement, Vashti’s dots “make quite a splash.” It is a lesson for all of us, young and old, to just begin. This wonderfully simple, yet poignant and elegant story can be used to encourage students at any age to take a risk, for that is where true learning and improvement take place.
