Chasing Vermeer
written by Blue Balliett
In this art mystery, two sixth graders are intertwined in the story by a series of unknown coincidences. The mathematical puzzle known as the pentomino plays a significant role in the book.

Activity: After discussing the beginning of the book, have your students write a letter to their parents about Chasing Vermeer. Students: Explain what has happened so far and tell your parents what you think of the book and the math connections found. Include questions that may be forming in your mind about the story. You can use the following site to write your letter at Read-Write-Think
